Hairy Pigs on Easdale Island

Having summoned the ferry to take us from Easdale village to Easdale Island by pressing the bell, we thought we’d probably be back on the next scheduled one about half an hour later. After all, it’s a small island and we had visited it previously. We had not anticipated the lure of the woolly pig or the blonde Mangalica pig, according to Wikipedia.

We found a sign saying ‘Pigs’ and followed the direction in which it pointed. We came across a sunken area with a couple of these lovely Mangalica snoozing away – this is the female.

Once we got closer, we realised that there was a large litter of tiny piglets sprawled over the male pig – we later established they were about 2 weeks old. They started to move around as we got closer.

Clearly, it was tea-time so they all made for the mother and started suckling. She did her best to sleep on.

After a lot of wriggling, they managed to line up so they could all get in to feed.

Happy little piglets!

Once fed, they all toddled off.

And back to dad – perhaps he has more body heat but the challenge was for the whole litter to climb on top of him and find a secure perch.

There were several false starts and not all climbing was elegant.

Some tried a double-decker approach to hold on.

Eventually, they managed to form a neat line although the one at the end didn’t look to secure and more wriggling, slipping and re-climbing followed.

Looking quite contented here.

They look much more comfortable lying snuggled up next to their dad – well, apart from the one underneath but it looked happy enough.

The sow slept on presumably happy that the boar was looking after their little family.

If you want to visit the pigs, they are owned by the folk who run the Easdale B&B which looks like a very peaceful place to stay.

It’s probably time for a wee round up, as we’ve had a busy 2016 that continues into 2017.

Retina Scottish International Photography Festival June – July 2017

Having been part of the Retina Scottish International Festival 2016, it is good to see the plans for this year’s Festival, which will run from the 17h of June to the 30th July. Lynn has recently joined the Retina Team as a board member and Paul is working as one of the volunteers.

The Festival 2017 line-up is now out, including details of the Photomarathon and Portfolio Reviews. All funds raised contribute to keeping the Festival running and making sure that access to the exhibitions remains free. You can also donate online or at each of the exhibitions.

People in Florence

Now that the sun has come out in Scotland, it feels like the right time to look back at our trip to Italy last year and do some more blog posts. We spent a few days in that beautiful city Florence and a post on the art and architecture will follow. But I thought I’d start with the people – we like street photography and Florence is full of people – you can’t move without tripping over tourists doing selfies or snapping each other with tablets. However, we tried to focus on the people who live and work in Florence. for instance, this doorman outside a posh hotel.

Having said all that, a post on people in Florence can’t ignore the tourists – and it’s hard to photography some of the main sights without tourists in shot. The replica of Michelangelo’s David outside the Palazzo Vecchio is impossible to photograph without visitors passing by so I embraced them as part of the shot.

We had a visit to Cove Harbour a wee while back. It is just down the coast from Edinburgh, between Dunbar and Eyemouth, near Cockburnspath. It is a favourite location for photographers and artists, but one that we hadn’t visited before, which is surprising given it is only a drive of about an hour so from the city.

We parked in Cove, at the top of the cliff, and then did the loop walk down to the harbour, up along the cliffs and then back around along the quiet road that goes to Pease Bay.

And so to some photos. We start with a view of Cove Bay and then the tunnel that is cut through the cliff to allow entry to the eastern side of the harbour.

A Visit To Burghead on the Moray Coast (1 of 2)

We were back again at the excellent Flowerburn Bed and Breakfast in Nairn, an ideal location for discovering the Inverness, Moray and Speyside areas (and beyond).

Here are some other walks that we have done from the same base;

You can also walk a long way along Nairn beach in both directions – it is beautiful and often deserted.

After a chat with our hosts about what they would recommend, we consulted the ‘walkers bible’ the Walk Highlands website, and decided to go to Burghead for a look around, then have a wander along the Burghead Beach towards Findhorn, leaving options for a further extended walk or a small trip elsewhere.

This post focuses on the harbour area, with another one on Burghead Beach – you can tell, we do like a nice beach.

The harbour is clearly used by fishermen so lots of fishing paraphernalia – piles of nets for instance.

Our work is now on display in The Art Collective, downstairs at 139 Princes Street, just along from Frasers (or Binn’s Corner for those of us who remember) together with a number of other photographers and artists.

We have a range of framed and rolled prints; framed prints vary in size from tiny (7.5 x 7.5 cm) up to approx A3 and prices start at £25. All work can be purchased and taken away.

There’s also good range of stuff on show including JaneR Designs quirky reworked bits’n’bobs, photography from Ross Nicholson Photography, Carol Cotterill Photography, Will Collier, Rod Hanchard-Goodwin, photography books from Beyond Words and much more.

Our prints are also still on display and for sale in The Dark Room in Ocean Terminal, Leith. The Dark Room is a Photography Hub, Studio and Event Space (a couple of doors along from Marks and Spencers).
