Having moved to Gorgie as a stepping stone to our longer term move to Torridon, we’re continuing to enjoy exploring a new neighbourhood.
Nearby Fountainbridge, the name originated in 1763 and derived from the Foullbridge Well of “singularly sweet water” according to Wikipedia, is a short wander and takes in the Union Canal which provides a lovely traffic-free artery from Tollcross to Westerhailes and beyond. We had noticed the imposing Fountainbridge Library but it took a friend to point out this impressive view from the steps at the southern end of The Telfer Subway from Dalry Road. This aspect takes in the whole of the northern exterior of this ‘art deco infused neo-classical building’ with its large window area with frieze running across it and the tower with its long, thin, vertical window.
It has an octagonal cupola and stairwell and our thanks to the library staff who didn’t rush me when trying to find a way to get this image avoiding the banister at closing time!
The Union Canal provides us a pleasant route to the Cameo Cinema which means we have had plenty opportunity to photograph it at night. The handy Leamington Lift Bridge provided a steady point for a longer exposure shot to catch the night reflections in the water.
The bridge also provides a higher vantage point to look back to Lochrin Basin, on this occasion being readied for the Canal Festival in June by Scottish Canals‘ weed cutter.
And of course, as well as offering vantage points, high and low, the bridge is itself a rather fine piece of engineering as you can see from this photo taken a few years ago.
And, finally, a reminder that we are online using the following –
Hello again – We paused our blog back in 2017, but are delighted to be re-starting it.
Back then we’d just had some exhibitions and had created a lot of work in our customary black and white style. We were active on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Flickr, our blog and in real life. This was all in addition to our day jobs; in the end we found it all too much to do so made the decision to scale back for a bit.
This was coupled with a desire to remove any engagement with social media run by Mark Zuckerberg, given the amount of personal data harvesting, dissemination of misinformation and worse. We cut back to just Twitter and real life. Although we have serious doubts about Musk-led Twitter, we’ll see how it plays out.
The roots of Henni.Photo were in late 2013, 10 years ago, so it seemed an appropriate time to review things now, in 2023 especially after the last 3 somewhat grim years.
What next? – As you may have seen or heard, we will be swapping our home in Edinburgh for one in Torridon, quite a change and both exciting and slightly daunting. After a few trips north during the last few years, the idea that we could make such a big step started to take shape. After we were both fortunate enough to retire from our day jobs, we decided to test winter living in the Highlands with a six week stay on the shores of Loch Broom, near Ullapool in Jan/Feb 2022. Far from being put off, we revelled in the winter landscape and the wild weather and the decision was made.
It took a bit of searching and a couple of failed attempts before we secured our own wee bit of paradise. We’ve signed up with Skye-based RHouse and have made the first steps towards building a house in Annat, Torridon. This will no doubt be a strand of future blogs.
The change of location and lifestyle will inevitably impact our photography as the photos from our time in Loch Broom demonstrates. We won’t be moving for 18 months or so and then will continue to visit Edinburgh regularly so expect a mix of styles and subjects in future. We will continue to be online using the following –
Our 2017 Selection of #Edinburgh #Festival #Photography
A selection of some of the images we took during the Edinburgh Festivities. As ever, lots going on, too much to try and see, random things happening on the street and plenty of photographic scenes to capture.
First up, the official Edinburgh International Festival opening, celebrating 70 years of the Festival and Fringe, including ‘Bloom’.
And some performers from The Wedding Reception out in Princes Street Gardens, looking the part as Bride, Groom, Mother of the Bride and embarrassing Father of the Bride.
Plenty of street perfomers to see.
Next up, a local bunch of acrobats.
And some street portraits.
And finally, here’s where you can currently see our prints on display.
If there are any other images you are interesting in buying as prints – framed, mounted or rolled in a tube – that are not in the exhibitions please email us to let us know.
And don’t forget to follow us on Facebook or Instagram, where we post regularly.
There’s a common theme amongst bloggers where they talk about a lack of recent posts and being busy with things, so here’s our contribution to this without the long discussion about it.
Firstly, here are a few recent images, which would have been in the now non-existent posts from the past wee while.
And a reminder of the Retina International Photography Festival 2017, now in the final weeks so a last chance to see the Royal Photographic Society exhibition at the Drill Hall which finishes tomorrow and the Emerging Talent and Shutter Hub exhibitions, both at Ocean terminal and which finish on Sunday 30th.
Finally, a short summary of what we have on show in Edinburgh at the moment.

Due to the response to the call for entries, there is also an additional mini-exhibition of the six winning entries and a further twelve runners-up as a set of eighteen canvas prints.
We went along for the opening event and were amazed at the size of Paul’s image under ‘S for Shopping’ within the exhibition. Lynn had to snap the proud photographer next to it.
And here’s the image itself – you can click on it to view it on our website if you want to see it in more detail (you can see it Full Screen there).
These are the other images that we entered.
henni.photo Prints and Etchings
Currently, our prints and etchings are on display at The Dark Room in Ocean Terminal and in the Art Collective at 139 Princes Street. All work is for sale and ready to take away, but please feel free just to go and have a look and tell us what you think. Nothing beats seeing a print on the wall, rather than just on a screen.

Urban Noir 2017 – henni.photo @ The Dark Room, Ocean Terminal, Leith
Our prints are currently on display and for sale in The Dark Room in Ocean Terminal, Leith. The Dark Room is a new Photography Hub, Studio and Event Space. There’s also work by the excellent Janer Designs who do industrial, steampunk style lights made from old camera equipment, salvage and more.
We have framed, mounted and rolled prints, plus two limited edition hand printed etchings available framed or mounted. We are hoping to spend a Saturday in the Dark Room soon – watch this space if you are interested in coming to meet us.
The poster image is a Leith shot of the Victoria Swing Bridge with the Shore area in the background.
Two of our newer images, Makar’s Court and Crossing Dundas.
Limited edition etching created by Paul of one of Lynn’s images – Clearing Haar taken from the balcony at the back of St Andrew’s House looking up to the Castle over Waverley Bridge and station.
Paul’s limited edition etching of one of his own images – Misty Meadows taken in winter during a period of prolonged mist.
If there are any other images you are interesting in buying prints of – framed, mounted or rolled in a tube – that are not in the exhibition, please let us know.
This is filming for the new Avengers Infinity War film. They were doing the drone and 3D shooting with some of the old town buildings lit up, red at this point. Interesting the difference it makes.
Here’s the City Art Centre in the middle of the action, above Waverley Station, with The Scotsman Hotel in yellow at the left.
And our more usual henni.photo black and white version.
Finally, a couple of shots of the lights they were using for this.
